Steps to Becoming an Agent

  • Education
    Regardless of where you live, all future agents must take pre–licensing courses. Different states have different requirements. Some states have a set number of hours you must complete, others look for college–level course experience. Before starting on your journey, explore your state’s real estate licensing requirements.

  • Choose a Brokerage
    All agents need to find a broker before graduating who can help them get their first clients . . . and many of the industry finest brokerages compose our network.   • Obtain Your License
    Once graduated, you need to pass your state and national exams. For those who want to operate in several states, you need to take individual tests for each state. Typically, a criminal background test is required before the state issues a license. Although, some states don’t require this.

  • Build a Client List
    Ask family and friends if they or anyone they know is planning to sell or buy in the near future. Networking is an absolutely critical part of becoming a successful agent.

  • Become a REALTOR®
    If you want to use the term ‘REALTOR®,’ you must first become a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) by choosing an affiliated brokerage and attending a certain number of meetings designated by your local chapter.
